Three countries hosting the World Cup! It sounds amazing, right? A huge party across North America!

For the local football fans in the host cities, this is going to be a blast. They get to see the World Cup right in their backyard. The BigSoccer forum guys are already talking about the USMNT schedule and what it all means. It’s a huge deal for the host countries, and the atmosphere in those cities is going to be electric. Host cities ke football fans ka liye to mazy ha he hain! (The football fans in the host cities are definitely going to have fun!) But let’s be real about the rest of us, especially the fans who want to follow their team from country to country.

This is a huge area. We’re talking about massive travel distances. I saw on the Grand Old Team forum that one fan said he’s “only interested in attending games in Canada and perhaps New York” because of the travel. And another fan talked about the ticket prices being too high.

Think about it: Your team plays in Vancouver, then in Miami, and then in Mexico City. That’s a huge headache! It’s expensive, it’s a lot of flying, and it’s a big time change. It’s not like following your team around a small country in Europe.

I know the host countries are trying to make it easy, but this is a massive challenge. Will the fans from other countries even be able to afford to follow their teams? Or will the stadiums just be full of local fans?

I hope this World Cup is an amazing party, but I’m worried about the travel and the cost for the real, dedicated traveling fans.
